VIRGIN FOREST
Project carried out between 2013 and 2015 in the Albergaria Forest, Gerês..
The Albergaria Forest is a place of profound symbolic resonance—one of the last ancient oak forests on the Iberian Peninsula, a fragment of a world that predates systematic human intervention. It was photographed exclusively during inclement weather over the course of three years. In this context, bad weather acts as both a conceptual and an atmospheric filter, stripping away seductive light and creating a visual coherence within the series that could not have been achieved otherwise. The photographs reveal a tangled, damp forest— one lacking a comfortable depth of field or any invitation to enter. Color exists but is subdued by the density and the light filtered through a gray sky; space exists but is blocked by the compression of planes. It is a forest that resists being photographed—physically and visually impenetrable— and it is precisely this resistance that the series documents.
