INVISIBLE LANDSCAPE

Photographs taken in 1998, at Cabo Espichel, always on stormy days, at night and with long exposures.

It is the prolonged time, while the shutter is open, that calms the rough sea. What sight could not see — the violent sea in darkness — photography makes visible through time that no human gaze experiences. Invisible Landscape thus names a double condition: what the night hides and what only photography is capable of revealing. The work explores the limits of the visible without trying to replace experience; rather, it proposes another way of perceiving it. The landscape here is inseparable from the time that made it visible.
